Today the Maremma has become one of the most important areas suited to viticulture, but it has not always been so. In fact the word maremma indicates any low and marshy area near the sea, where the tomboli, or the strings of coastal land, prevent the water courses from flowing freely into the sea causing stagnation, creating marshes and swamps.
These lands were dedicated exclusively to cattle farming and a representative figure of this land was the Buttero: the man responsible for the care of the animals that reached the herds on the backs of the strong Maremma horses. A “heroic” character who represented and still represents the symbol of this ancient land, was and is also the guardian of millennial secrets of this profession.
Maremma, well-known as the place, where malaria raged for entire centuries until at the end of the nineteenth century ,The Grand Duke Leopold II of the Lorraine began the work of reclamation; much land had to be freed from the grip of the swamps and malaria making it accessible to agricultural production: the transition to agriculture was taking place.
With the agrarian reform of the Maremma Authority and the allocation of land and hard peasant toil; the Maremma has thus become a land of conquests. Over the years all this has allowed the development of viticulture giving life to the Morellino di Scansano DOCG.
